Governance Power Dynamics: Boards, Donors, & More

Governance Power Dynamics: Boards, Donors, & More

Wednesday, October 15, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:30 PM) (CDT)

Description

This session is designed with all grantmakers in mind. It will explore the power dynamics funders regularly navigate in governance settings.

Whether the power is real or perceived, it may come from various sources – a donor, legacy volunteer, or major funder. We will discuss power dynamics, acknowledge realities (including harassment*), explore the dependency quotient, and review current research on the topic.

Kerri has led this session with funders previously to extremely positive feedback. Participants noted that it helped them better navigate their own Board/Trustee dynamics and also informed how they support nonprofit grantees and lead as volunteer nonprofit board members.

*This session will discuss sexual harassment, which can be triggering for some individuals.

What is the Midwest Partnership?

The Midwest Partnership is a collaboration between the Council of Michigan Foundations, Indiana Philanthropy Alliance, Philanthropy Missouri, and Philanthropy Ohio.

The Midwest Partnership publishes an annual Midwest Grantmaker Salary Report (sign up for the release and briefing of the 2025 report here) and hosts joint programs, including monthly webinars connecting funders across the four states. Webinars are typically designed for community foundations, corporate foundations and giving programs, and/or family foundations. Occasionally, a program -- like this one! -- will be relevant to all foundation types. Regardless of focus, all foundation types may register for any program.

Participation in webinars and access to the annual Salary Report is free for Member organizations. Non-Members may not access the report but may register for most webinars by contributing a $75 fee.
